Hasin Rayhan Joins TURE Lab as a Ph.D. Student

We are excited to welcome Hasin Rayhan to TURE Lab as a new Ph.D. student. Hasin received his B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Dhaka, with a focus on communication and signal processing. His previous research includes radar- and Wi-Fi-based non-contact physiological sensing, and he will bring his signal processing and engineering experience to TURE Lab’s research in advanced ultrasound technologies.

Dr. David Bustamante Joins TURE Lab

Dr. David Bustamante Joins TURE Lab

We are excited to welcome Dr. David Bustamante, who joined TURE Lab as a Postdoctoral Fellow on August 1, 2026.

Dr. Bustamante will focus on developing a novel theranostic ultrasound system based on enclosed-geometry transducers. His research will integrate advanced transducer design, quantitative ultrasound imaging, and acoustic field control to enable precise and image-guided ultrasound therapies.

His work will further advance TURE Lab’s efforts in ultrasound tomography, acoustic field shaping, and next-generation theranostic technologies for biomedical applications.

Poster Presentation Accepted at 2026 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium

The collaborative research work titled "Physics-Constrained Data-Driven Transcranial Ultrasound Full Waveform Inversion with Realistic 3D Acoustic Simulation" has been accepted for a poster presentation at the 2026 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS).

This work, in collaboration with Dr. Youzuo Lin from the School of Data and Information Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, develops a physics-constrained, data-driven framework for transcranial ultrasound full waveform inversion using realistic three-dimensional acoustic simulations. The approach aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of ultrasound-based brain imaging and therapeutic applications.

Congratulations to the team on this achievement!

2026 University Research Grant Award Funding Established

TURE Lab has established funding through the 2026 University Research Grant Award to develop a quantitative ultrasound tomography (UST)-guided adaptive focusing framework for transcranial ultrasound applications.

The project aims to address skull-induced acoustic distortions that limit the accuracy and safety of focused ultrasound by using UST-derived acoustic property maps to guide adaptive beamforming and focusing strategies.

Through realistic 3D acoustic simulations and benchtop skull phantom experiments, this work will establish feasibility benchmarks for future image-guided transcranial ultrasound technologies.

Adam Ong Joins the TURE Laboratory as an Undergraduate Research Assistant

We are pleased to welcome Adam Ong to the TURE Laboratory as an Undergraduate Research Assistant. Adam joined the lab on January 8, 2026, and is working on the development of a motorized, high-resolution, and high-accuracy 3D scanning system for studying acoustic holographic technologies using a ring-array ultrasound transducer. His project will support the development and experimental characterization of advanced ultrasound field-shaping and theranostic technologies.

Publication in IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics

Publication in IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics

The research article “Acoustic and Thermal Characterization of Tissue-mimicking Phantoms for Modeling Focused Ultrasound Hyperthermia” has been published in IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics.

Led by Dr. David Bustamante, this collaborative work developed and characterized tissue-mimicking phantoms for focused ultrasound hyperthermia modeling and validation using a 256-element ring-array ultrasound transducer.

This work was conducted during Dr. Bustamante’s previous research with Dr. Mohammad Mehrmohammadi’s laboratory and contributes to advancing quantitative modeling methods for therapeutic ultrasound technologies.

TURE Laboratory Launches at Wayne State University

The Theranostic Ultrasound Research and Engineering (TURE) Laboratory was established on October 15, 2025, in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Wayne State University. The lab develops quantitative ultrasound imaging and image-guided theranostic technologies for biomedical research and precision therapy.
